Body Language

Body language is an important part of communication. It is a universal language. People in all countries use body language in one way or another. Body language means gestures and facial expression that people use to express their feelings and emotions. Gestures and facial expression might mean different things in different cultures. Examples of body language are raising your eyebrows, nodding your head etc. Body language makes communication more lively and interesting.

• Why is body language important for communication?

SK: Listen & Speak – Transcript

Can we communicate without words? How?
Yes I think we can communicate without words. Words help us express our feelings and emotions both in an oral form or in a written form. But I think it’s possible to communicate without words. For example if you don’t know how to speak, you can draw a picture and you can try to express yourself and communicate with other people or if you are not able to find the word you’re looking for. You can maybe use your hands. You can use gestures, you can use your body to express what you mean or to communicate with other people. So it’s possible to communicate without words but I think words make communication much faster and a lot more efficient because if you try to draw a picture for everything you want to express it takes a very long time or if you try to use gestures to express everything to communicate then it becomes very difficult. So this is what I think.
Do you use your body language while speaking?
I think I use my body language while speaking for example if I’m trying to explain something. I use my hands or if I’m trying to communicate with a with another person I think I use my head my facial gestures so if I’m happy I smile. If I’m not happy or if I’m confused I make it clear using my body movements using my body language.
Do people in your country use body language?
Yes people in our country use body language and I think everyone uses body language and it’s not just about our country. I think people in all countries use body language. I think it’s universal. For example when you’re angry maybe you you make gestures with your hand or maybe you shake your head So body language is something that everyone uses.
Do you think body language makes the speech more effective? Why?
Yes I think body language makes a speech more effective because when you use your body language I think your communication becomes more effective. You are able to express yourself more clearly if you simply speak and do not move, if you don’t use your body language you’ll look like a robot. You look like someone who does not have emotions. We expect other people to use their body language maybe use their facial expressions. We expect them to use gestures. We expect them to use their hands and so on. So if someone is not using his or her body language then that speech becomes dull or boring. So as a result of this I think body language makes the speech more effective.
What are the benefits of body language?
I think there are many benefits of body language. First of all body language makes a talk or a speech more effective. Secondly it makes at speech or it makes communication more entertaining. For example if someone does not use body language, I think of their speech becomes kind of boring or dull. And finally I think using body language makes communication more effective because it makes us look more human. So for example if you’re angry and if you clenched fist or if you’re angry and if you raise your eyebrows that makes it more real. So body language definitely contributes to communication.
Is it hard to interpret the message given by body language? I think this is a tricky question because sometimes I think it’s easy to understand body language but sometimes it’s not easy to understand body language. For example, some signals are very clear. If you’re angry and if you’re clenching your fist or if you’re angry and you’re raising your eyebrows I think it’s clear. So if I see someone looking angry I know that they’re angry. So it’s easy to understand but sometimes there are some subtle cues. There are some detailed gestures and it might be difficult to understand them. Especially I think men are not very good at understanding those body movements. I think women are more capable of interpreting those messages and sometimes body language might differ from country to country. So the the body language that we use here in Turkey might be different from the body language that people in the US use. So there might be differences and these differences make it difficult to interpret the body language.
